First, it is perfectly ok to use, and is recognized by the vast majority of modern browsers (about 90%). It may not be recognized by a lot of users however, and it most certainly will have vocal detractors with possible vested interests elsewere, that your potential users may or may not ever run into.

Second, it is the stated purpose of the providers to offer low volume sites the ability to engage in secure e-commerce for what should be a reasonable amount of time to at least start seeing some traffic/sales.

Third, at the end of the first year the certificate will expire. It is expected that you would see the value of their service and subscribe to their regular product (which is still priced way under the 'big boys'), because, if you are successful, you are still doing business, still need the certificate, and have benefitted from their gift to you of a year's free service to help get you started.
