UPD Package Redirection Scam

shipping to valid billing address may not be safe!

I understand that it is possible for someone with a stolen credit card to place an order with the "ship to" address matching the valid "billing" address of the card and then after the order is shipped redirect the shipment to another address. With UPS all that is needed to effect the change of delivery address is the tracking number.

So if you send a confirming email with the UPS tracking number you are potentially giving a crook the means to steal your goods!

Is this just a hypothetical problem or does it routinely happen?

I don't think this can happen with Priority Mail or Express Mail, but is the problem the same with FEDEX?

Short of not providing tracking numbers is there a way to avoid this potential fraud?

UPS should default to no redirect. Confirm with your rep that this is your policy. We just had a redirect from Australia to Indonesia and UPS picked up the tab.

I know that UPS always requires one attempt before a redirection is possible (from my personal experiences).

ok you will love this one,this is how easy it is, our store in miami we had a new manager, and she redirected everything to her house! you bet, ups ended up paying but she was suppose to open up at 10 am and would not open up to noon so ups would leave the note and then redirect to her house, needless to say she got fired but it took me a surprise trip to our store to figure it out the other staff that logs it in worked the 3-11 shift,

ups is way to easy on redirects! sheila

I would expect that it becomes increasingly important to send the package "signature required" when the value of the package reaches a certain level.
