I would start things off, but have not started by business as yet!
Cheers!
If you have a small ad budget I would start with Goolge Adwords. Budget a campaign say around $100 and start with the most precise matches of terms to your product/service.
Although high usage terms tend to produce a more diverse audience to your site and more potential for sales - this can produce a vast uninterested audience thus your budget is eaten away pretty quickly.
As far as staying away from any - most avenues will produce fruition, some more than other, and some cost more than others, but they are to a degree effective.
The only clear thing to avoid is third party paid-off submission. This is fruitless - and a total waste of your budget.
I'm sure other members will be along to suggest some more avenues based on their experiences.
Good Luck :)
