Do you have any idea how sites that offer trial downloads and streams manage their bandwidth costs? When we projected how much bandwidth might be used for trials as a percentage of hits to the site, the numbers were horrifying. How do download sites make any money?

most of the download sites i know don't do the file hosting on theirselves. this has been done by the producers of the files themselves or they got a lot of mirrors. the last option is to become a member and then pay a monthly fee or one fee to enter.

if you want to host yourself, you should have got a good price for traffic. this might be paid with commercials on your site.

you can limit the bandwidth for a trial section, too. if you're using apache, look for mod_bandwidth and there is another one, i can't remember. with the first mod you can setup a max kbps for a sites location, so if 1000 user leech, it would be as much as 10. quite cool i think to control your costs.
