After being an internationally verified paypal member for several months it seems visa is no longer accepted as a means of verification - if this is what I understand correctly from their garbled quasi-human-but-obviously-automated help center email. Does anyone know anything about this? Do I have to get a Mastercard or something specially just to verify the account?

Doesn't verfied mean that you've entered the number they gave you on your statement to confirm you are the cardholder?

There is also a verfied address status, this means that the AVS results match (I believe). Not all card issuers allow AVS at the moment - this is true of Mastercard as well as Visa. But have some that comply, some that don't.
