First off, ive browesed around the various parts of these forums, and i must say it is the most informitive webmaster forum i have come across.

Now, onto the good stuff...
I've never tried this type of web venture, and hope i am not going about anything the wrong way, or forgetting anything. I am a total newcommer so forgive me if this seems basic- theres a good reaosn for that.

I have made a static site for basic information i wish to provide to potential clients. I have also installed zen-cart and will be setting up a merchant account with paypal. The way i have read, and been told, buyers will not need a paypal account to purchase goods. Also, using paypal i wont need any SSL certificates.

If anyone can shed some light as to the pro's and con's of what im doing, and if possible, offer some helpful tips i'd appreciate it. I just want to make sure when i launch the site, i have all possible bases covered. Thanks.

Welcome to WebMasterWorld, legitimist!

The fact that you have found this forum might good be responsible for 50% of your future success.

1. Starting small is good. Using free cart and PayPal for your start is good. Some might say PayPal decreases credibility of your shop, but it is good for the beginning. Even better is to test your product with eBay first.
2. Starting clever is good: be sure your shop looks professional from the very beginning (if you are not a designer, buy a professional site template from somewhere, it costs $30-$60 nowadays). Be sure your shop works without programming errors. Test it many times, everything.
3. On-line business is still a business. Buy some "entrepreneurial" books -- online business is still a business, you can be surprised how many insights from off-line business world is applicable to on-line.
4. Avoid big spending without strong knowledge of what you are doing.
5. Be patient.

Just some common-sense thoughts.
Hope this helps :)

PS: The worst thing about e-commerce: do not wait to make fortune overnight. It might take a year or more before you see some tangible results from your venture.
