Recently we have had several people inquiring about whether or not we accept American Express Gift Cards.

To date, we have not been able to get these to go through, they always get declined.

We run a couple of sites that sell similar products and I have noticed that if a potential customer places an order using one of these and it gets declined at one site, they will usually try placing an order with one of other sites. Interesting thing is, even if one of other sites offers the same item, the person will rarely try and buy that exact item on the other site.

Me thinks a scam is a foot.

Anybody else experiencing a similar thing?

Anybody else processing american express gift cards?

That does sound a bit suspicious. I couldn't find anything on the newswires about it.

I have seen these on leaflets in Cambridge, they are genuine and I did think of buying one for the same purpose. I.e buying on teh web only and yes I did wonder if they would work so left them alone.

I assume they get declined for AVS failure?

No, it does not appear to be because of AVS Failure

Is the gift card's balance greater than the purchase price? If there is not enough on the card to cover the entire purchase, the card will be declined for insufficient funds. (Some customers don't realize that Amex gift cards don't work like a store gift card, and they expect to be able to apply multiple forms of payment to a single purchase.)

I don't know how AVS works with Amex giftcards, but the Visa giftcard I've tried had an option to set up the billing address using an online form at the bank's website.

I have had an AmEx giftcard before and used it with no problems at a brick and mortar location.

The giftcards work slightly different and sometimes you might even need to tell your MAP that you wish to accept giftcards.

The problem would also lie that if the giftcard is valued at $50.00 and you are buying $75.00 worht of merchandise. Is your software capable of handling this type of transaction?
