I work for a company which is one of several subsidiaries / divisions of a larger parent company. We are headed toward a business environment in which we will generally handle all the ecommerce activities for all subsidiaries and divisions.
A question has come up regarding sending email blasts to buyers of products from other divisions and how CAN-Spam might apply.
Here's the basic question: if we are Company A (and CompanyA.com is the domain of our mail server) and Company B is one of our sister companies, is it a problem if our email blasts have a From line which reads "Company B" but the routing information of the email blast says that the mail server being used for the email blast is CompanyA.com.
Note: I'm not an expert on servers, hardware, email routing, etc. I'm confident that our IT department can handle issues related to reverse DNS, etc. (that probably shows you I'm not an expert, but I trust you know what I'm getting at). My question is more with regard to appearance. Will we be seen as being in violation of CAN-Spam if the mail server in the routing information doesn't match the From line?
Can you point me to any websites which address this specific subject (I've been able to find sites which deal with the issue of a customer opting out of one division's emails but not another, but I haven't been able to find anything which addresses the mismatch question).
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer - I really appreciate it.
Frank
This doesn't get into the issue of whether it's OK for subsidiary B to send email to customers of subsidiary A, though, but it sounds like you have that issue resolved to your satisfaction.
