I currently have a site which was done with OSCommerce a few years ago. Now it is time to do a redesign and I am looking for someone that is very good with OSCommerce. Does anyone have any recommendations?

What about ecommerce in general? Does anyone here hire someone else to do their work? I am with a small company and have alot of duties, thus I don't have the time to create a site myself. But, I am strugling with the task of finding someone who can do professional-looking sites.

OsCommerce code is a real mess. But there are more than few programmers on the likes of guru.com, elance.com that could help you.

There is a forum for OsCommerce themes. I am sure people there are in the know. But yes, OsCommerce does really suck. The code is a huge mess. I'd never touch it again with a 10 foot pole.

What do you all recommend instead of oscommerce?

The biggest problem I have had with OSCommerce is that the code is too interwoven with the layout. The result is that instead of being able to make one simple change in one spot, you have to go into virtually every page that will display and tweak the markup. It is a real pain.

I am told that Zen Cart has taken the basic OSCommerce code and made improvements in this area. Haven't tried it though. Also, I am not sure that OSC addons and contributions work with Zen Cart, so if you are looking for a template change to an existing, modified OSC install Zen Cart may not be the way to go.

OScommerce is really powerful if you really need a solution taylor made. There is no other shopping cart package that has as many people that can modify and consitantly release modifications for. There are plenty of people who know that they are doing with OSC.

IMHO by modding the originally bad code, you are digging yourself even deeper into a pile of

You will get every kook in the world wanting you to pay them to work on oscommerce, so be careful.

It is sort of a waste of money to pay someone to work on that sloppy code when you can start with something better.
