What is the best tool or tool set to use for comparing our prices to the competitors? I'm not looking for a one off where a single item number is entered and it gives back the competitors price matches for comparison. An API or some other widget would be good..

Rather I'm looking to be able to send bulk sku's or UPC codes and have it bring back a downloadable table showing our price and the competitors. Thoughts?

These tools are expensive, and as soon as you dive into the specifics of what you actually need, you'll see the choices narrow down quickly.

Here are two lists, perhaps a good starting point for you:

As RhinoFish indicates, these kinds of tools are generally commercial and not cheap ... but there's an additional caveat that they need be run daily as your competitors can change their pricing daily, seeking the ever smaller profit as they mark down their stuff against your stuff (and the many others out there you both compete with!).

Nothing worse than publishing a price comparison that is not UPDATED DAILY (at the least) or HOURLY.

This can be a dog chasing tail no sum game for many. Make your best offer, as you see fit and still maintain an operating profit, and go from there. You can't compete with pricing suicide, or if you do, you end up in the same place... with nothing to show for it.

I agree with you tangor on not committing pricing suicide.

My thoughts are that if a company were to commit to doing this process that they would have margin thresholds which they would not go below. This threshold would be set on each/all items in order to remain profitable.

Given that point, it would be possible to create a function that would run the price comparisons then automatically adjust price so as not to go below the margin threshold. Make sense?

This clearly needs to be balanced with the thought of not causing company devaluation or leaving "money on the table".
