Its a Saturday and Yahoo!'s customer service isn't open on weekends even though they have it posted open seven days a week. Anyways I am interested in opening up an online shop with some flexibilty. I have played around with osCommerce with no avail, and looking for an easier solution to open up my online store.

Yahoo!'s Merchant Solutions seems to fit the bill, however I am very antsy and couldn't wait till Monday to ask the sales rep about an inquiry of mine, plus I heard Yahoo's support team sucks.

With all that set aside, what I want to accomplish is a setup where the main page houses the main categories via images (in this case four). When one of the categories is clicked I want the customer to be led into a second page with sub categories as images as well, for instance if a customer clicks "bedding" the customer is lead to the sub category page where he/she can choose "bedding type 1" "type 2" ect... Once the sub category is chosen the customer is led to the product description with the options available. What I want to offer is more than just color or size, rather fabric color/make on different sections of the item. I am looking to put about 10 different options for each section on an item, for example "bedding" "type 1" is a drum shaped bed with options of 10 different fabrics for the top, side, and bottom. I would also like to place thumbnails that expand for better view of the fabric.

Sorry for the lenghty post. Thanks in advance John.

There are a few tricks to seo'ing yahoo stores.
The out-of-the-box configuration is not what you want.

A couple of years ago you could do a set of template mods that increased traffic 3x to 4x.

Now it is good for about 10% to 20%.

After that is it all about basic seo, naming sections and products proper, inbound linkage etc . . .

Once you get to know your way around the editor and figure out how to add the correct properties you are on your way.

Template configurations need to be done by the elite rtml group, I am not one of those.

We have a few customers using them. You need to also look at what your competitors are selling their merchandise for and can you beat it?

They also charge for the use of their gateway - while most gateways do not charge or charge a $.10-$.15 transaction fee.

And also look at all their other charges as well - being listed in specific directories, etc

Thanks for the links Minapple, its definitely a start to what I am trying to accomplish. Since Yahoo! doesn't offer a demo of their cart software, I wonder if its possible to increase the drop down menu fields, for instance the links you provided only had a drop down menu for size and color, is it possible to make 3, 4, 5 ect... drop down menus for say like, top, side, bottom ect...?

I understand that there are plenty of other ecommerce solutions available, I have done my homework and I know for a fact Yahoo! is definitely not the best deal out there with 1.5% taken from each sale plus .15 cents for transaction fees it definitely adds up. I just like what Yahoo! is offering at the moment in terms of space, monthly bandwith allotment, and monthly fees. The $0 dollar setup fee is also a nice incentive. This goes without regard that I do have some concerns with Yahoo! for the future of my business. For starters this is my first online business, and I am concerned with investing too much right off the bat. I feel I need to get a feel for the market before I decide to invest large sums of money into my business. If I had the funds I would have probably chosen MonsterCommerce and bought a merchant account instead of using Paypal. Paying $99 dollars a month plus the average cost of a merchant account is a little to steep for me right now, this is where Yahoo! comes in. Like I said I do have my concerns, hypothetically lets say my online business takes off and I am averaging $12,000 a month, cleary the 1.5% + .15 cents and 1.9% +.30 cent is going to cost my humble business a fortune. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe Yahoo! provides the SSL certification within all its packages, thats another plus. Until the sweet day that I am raking in $12,000 a month Yahoo! seems right for now.

Well the 1.5% is only Yahoo's costs. There is the merchant account costs as well. Yahoo is only the electronic payment gateway in this instance. They are reselling Paymentech, although you can use any processor that uses First Data as their transaction processor - which is almost any MAP.

I was going to sign up with them in beginning but their prices were a bit too much than what I really wanted to pay. I decided to use LinkPoint and they do not charge anything extra on their transactions
