The E.U.'s Competition Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, is looking into Amazon's treatment of merchants using its website. It's a preliminary investigation to help understand the situation, according the to Commissioner.

“The question here is about the data” Amazon collects from smaller merchants on its site, Vestager said. “Do you then also use this data to do your own calculations, as to what is the new big thing, what is it that people want, what kind of offers do they like to receive, what makes them buy things? That has made us start a preliminary” investigation, she said.

Meanwhile for the past week our Tv has been inundated with ads by Amazon supposedly showing how they "partner" with French SMEs..unfortunately the "example" SME they use ( a non existent "made up" one ) has a logo which is it's name written out in "cursive", they chose a "cursive font" that is almost impossible to read..making it very hard to trace the "small business", when one does so, it does not exist :)

The ads close with a "fade page" of various business logos which "work" with Amazon ( have pages on Amazon ) none of which are "small" by any means, final frame is the Amazon logo..

A not very "ept" attempt by Amazon's PR dept to head off criticism at the pass..

Merchants have long complained about Amazon pulling the rug from under them.

I wonder if Amazon knew this was coming and its why they are going on this initiative. [webmasterworld.com...]
