eBay is to make PayPal payments optional having signed a new agreement with Adyen to make it eBay's primary partner for payments processing around the globe.
The transition to full payments intermediation will be a multi-year journey, and eBay will move as quickly as possible to complete this process within the parameters of the Operating Agreement with PayPal, which remains in place through mid-2020, with an extended PayPal checkout agreement to 2023.

eBay will start small scale in North America in the second half of 2018, with the majority of payments being through Adyen during 2021.

what payment types will be allowed?

I remember the old days, when a money order was sent in an actual paper envelope with a stamp on it!

Wow. End of an era. The entire reason I even have PayPal is so I could buy useless crap on ebay when I was in middle school. I say useless crap because I truly was buying the silliest things.. Don't let a middle schooler have access to ebay.

I say useless crap because I truly was buying the silliest things..

Over a great many years I have found many, many items which retail outlets sell at high cost to be cheap as chips on eBay.

The prime example I always mention was an Mmx adaptor most retailers advertising online for between $A 32.99 and $A 49.99 plus $A !5.00 postage. Virtually every item I buy is vastly cheaper.

On eBay the identical item from China $A 1.06 post paid. Still working like a charm as are all my other purchases for well over 10 years back.

As for the new payment scheme? Paypal has served me very well right back to the days of its inception.
