Our ecommerce site carries about 6000 items in a narrow niche product. Each item is described pretty well in-depth. Rankings in Google are good and we use adwords.
Currently, we run no editorial content. Will adding this help in driving significantly more traffic to my site or is the product detail sufficient?

Thanks

significantly, is the issue. If you have products not ranking adquately in google than product specific editorial content should help. Adding one page of content to one product will probably have no effect. Better to refine that one page for ranking, add content or refine for a specific search term. If your average page seo rank is in the 20's out of a couple of 100k pages then doubling your content with SEO refined pages should move them up by about half maybe better.

My experience only.

if you have good rankings, no point changing them

if you have 6000 products, set up more websites to bring in more traffic - there's nothing like dominating the top 10 positions on google .......
