E commerce product page meta tags

I am working on e commerce portal. Are meta tags necessary for product pages. If yes then how do i go about it properly. Please help me on this?

Depends which ones you are talking about and what you mean by "necessary"

If you mean "description" then that is certainly a highly desirable one to have.

If you mean "keywords" then most search engines ignore them and are probably a waste of effort to define.
