Banner Ads On Same Popular Forums As Competitors?

There is a very popular forum that has users that are my target customers. The issue is I see one of my competitors already advertising on this forum.

Should I still try advertising on this popular targeted forum? Or would I be better off finding a smaller targeted forum that my competitors are not advertising on?

Firstly, I'd want to be sure the forum is the right one, rather than throwing money straight at it. You could also end up in a bidding war, reducing your ROI.

Assuming they have done their research, if it is your target audience, there's no other reason not to go for it. You might find the smaller sites provide better value for money.
