on my ecommerce site, i have the ability to view what pages the users' last clicked on if they had something in their cart.

so i have the ability to see the precise page and look for problems they may have encountered.

however, most visitors do not enter through the main page.. it's usually a product page.. yet my highest click-off is my main page! all my main page has is items added within the past few days, any sales and a small description about the type of products i sell and navigation to the entire site. i can find no problems with it. it's has been tested on many different pc's.

the second highest click-off page is the shopping cart, which baffles me. they were reviewing the items they intended to purchase. what's the turn-off? the only other feature aside from the edit/update cart is the subtotal. the customer can view the item price on the product page, so the subtotal should be of no shock.

the next page is checkout confirmation. i reckon this has a lot to do with the fact i don't accept credit cards (except through paypal). this is something i plan to work on shortly.
this makes sense why the checkout confirmation page is the thid highest click-off. (i would have actually expected this to be higher in the list)

next is the product page. let's keep in mind that this is a measurement of click-offs for people that HAVE THINGS IN THEIR CART. so they aren't clicking from a search engine and getting an unexpected product....

next is the "enter your shipping information" page. this is one of the unknown wonders of the world. how do people expect to receive their products if they don't give me their address?
if it matters, i do have a working SSL.


i have a very clean, well-designed website that's easy to navigate. the only problem is the loading time for dialup users.. my pages are graphic-intensive and run off a database... i knew from the start the loading time would be a feat to conquer. but for anyone on dsl or cable, the loading time is 1-2 (maybe 3) seconds (i have a timer in my browser ;) ) the category navigation is cached on the server, so every user sees the same category nav's and it loads from the cache, rather than fetching the info from the database for each visitor.

i realize you can't make much of a speculation as to why these pages are the most frequently clicked off without actually viewing the page, but i would like to hear your comparison stories and whether or not you figured out a problem that was "hidden" so to speak..
i do not expect every single cart to turn into a sale, but i would like to slim down the amount of click-offs (who wouldn't?)

as you said, its difficult to tell without seeing the pages. there may be something ovious which you might have overlooked.

We get a high proportion of users filling their shopping basket just to see what the total would be, and they dont go beyond the confirmation page. When we contact them, they confirm they were just enquiring and dont want to go ahead with order.

on the checkout confirmation, as you said, it could be anything from payment methods, to unexpected tax/shipping charges.
