I was just wondering. What would you say the SEO must-haves/must-dos are for an ecommerce site?

So far I've done the following:

Meta tags, page copy, submitted to search engine, entered a few directories, PPC, social networks, comments, Yahoo Answers... Probably more...

Are there any places you would recommended submitting my site? I've submitted to DMOZ

Is your business purely mail order or is there a bricks and mortar presence too?

Being related to a locality gives you a lot more possible natural links. Apart from that it is going to depend very much on business sector, in some there is a lot of natural linking in others its dog eat dog.

Don't forget the SEO is as well as promoting the business through the classic routes not an alternative.

It's purely mail order. I've tried to submit to the local sites :(

I've spread business cards around town and considered a few other methods. Everything is still new I guess.

Just tightened up my meta tags and such again. I think it's going to take awhile to get things right. I'm just frustrated because I haven't had one darn sale yet. It's making me question the products, the look and feel of the website, etc.
