I intensely dislike PayPal from bad experiences in the past, but a colleague suggested we try paypal on a small fun site, so i (reluctantly) agreed - it's not a vital e-commerce business - we'll only be taking small payments from a few friends every now and then, nothing more

anyway, he got the paypal account set up (at the 2nd attempt) and created a buy now button - simple - except it doesn't work

the buy now button goes to the paypal payment page - but some users are required to open a paypal account - account optional is switched on - so what's gone wrong?

paypal rejects my uk debit cards - no idea why - i can (and have) used them with worldpay, protx and other systems - only paypal has a problem with them

after unsuccessful payment attempts, paypal now says my email addresses are registered with paypal and won't let me pay for anything online without entering another (new) email address - i don't (as far as i know) actually have a paypal account of my own - it's like if paypal rejects your card for whatever reason, you need to try again with a new card and new email address

had same problem with other people who already have paypal accounts - guessing that account optional will only work for people who don't have existing paypal accounts - anyone with a paypal account is forced to pay via their existing paypal account instead of directly from their credit card

can anyone tell me if we've done soemthing wrong or if this is normal?

I assume you have a Business account for receiving the payments? (Account Optional does not work for Personal accounts.)

If you want to send me your site URL by sticky mail, I can see if there is any obvious reason why it might be disabled.

If I recall correctly, you can use Paypal Optional if you use a credit card number not associated with Paypal. So, use a different credit card number if you are a Paypal member.
