Last week Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba shocked the web with news that its subsidiaries Taobao (like a Chinese eBay) and T-mall (like Amazon) sold a massive $3.06 billion in product in a single 24-hour period.

Wow. Just wow.

Just the infrastructure to handle that sheer volume of transactions is quite impressive.

For sure, seems like a step-up from anything else before.

The article states 0.7 billion user accounts, so that'd be about $4-$5 per person which seems entirely reasonable in itself.

It's immense for a company of any description to be handling that kind of cash on any single day.

Its really unbelievable. But with an increase in the number of ecommerce users, I guess it is possible. Maybe they were preparing themselves for something like this so the infrastructure has to be really good to handle something so huge.

Taobao is ubiquitous in China with online shopping, even more than Amazon is here in North America. My girlfriend even frequently buys from there and gets shipped back to Canada.
