Has anyone any experience of trying this via websites and email lists?

I know a few mail order companies do this, ie, Boden offer £2.50 of an order for each friend you recommend who then buys from them.

We would like to do something along these lines, but not sure how well it works vs the hassle of setting it up. If we send to our email list, I can't see how we can easily track who has been recommended by whom, and whether they bought, and then give the money/discount. Any suggestions/ideas?

thanks

My guess is that you are looking for affiliate or reseller software that you can integrate with your website.

I know that there are pretty good programs available.

Does it work? That all depends on what content or products you offer and what incentive you offer them. If people think it is a valuable resource, they will easier sign up as an affiliate, especially if they can earn $25 or 50%.

Hi,

I don't think I do mean reseller/affiliates. I mean Jane sits next to Harry at work and says 'hey, have you seen this site' and when harry then buys something off us, Jane gets a discount on her next order. And if she tells two more people she gets another discount.

This is just word of mouth, and rewarding customers who tell others. The customers don't need a website!

You'll probably need to give each person a unique code that their friends enter when they buy something. Then you'll be able to see how many orders each person has referred to you.
