Is it possible to set up a single Pay Pal account to accept transactions on multiple websites - but for users who make a purchase only to see details related specifically to the site they are on.

I'm thinking about things like the account name that people see - and the name that appears on their credit card statement.

I know, of course, that you could just use one account with one 'generic' business name to handle payments on all my different websites - but then users might see a name on their credit card statement that they don't recognise.

AFAIK you cannot even easily change your business name in your PayPal account -- you have to send a request to PayPal support to have it changed.

I've seen once a fat checkbox on somebody's checkout page, like: "I recognize this transaction appears on my credit card statement as originated by Blue Widgets Company, Inc."

Pretty odd trick, however -- it is against common rules, to have something on checkout pages unless is absolutely neccessary (not to have customer distructed when she/he is about to make a purchase).

Paypal is absolutely useless when it comes to handling multiple sites. They only allow 3 customized checkout styles as well, so if you run more than 3 sites, you are going to have to use the default for some of them.
There are other annoyances, like not being able to change the "customer service" email displayed on a per-site basis, too.

I've sent numerous Emails to them asking why their support for multiple sites is so shoddy, but never get a satisfactory answer.

Just to put the above comment into perspective, I am not aware of merchant accounts nor payment gateways that allow you to collect money under different identities. So, the fact that you can have three different identities seems better than the alternative. I've been pondering this issue myself and have not come up with any good solutions yet... I know there are people doing this but they're not talking... ;)

True, merchant accounts also require you to use a common business name, but the big advantage is that you are not forced to show this name whilst the customer is making a payment. The custome rgenerally only sees this on their statements.

The best way to do it (in paypal) is to simply have a "generic" parent company name (as the first poster suggested).
If you don't do this, you are going to have to get multiple bank accounts and link each one to a different PayPal account, which I can imagine being a major headache.

This adds potential for chargeback and more phone calls from confused customers that wants to know why BlueWidget appears on their statement when bought from CyberWidget.

I don't think this is a big problem - at least not from my experience.
In a lot of cases (and even from some retail stores), the name on the statement bears little resemblance to the actual company name and I think most customers who even bother to check such things are generally smart enough to figure things out from the charge amount and date.
This however, is digressing from the original problem of it being impossible to effectively use Paypal to take payments from multiple sites with custom names and branding for each.

Thanks for the info everyone ...

Looks like that generic business name is the best option for me.
