Is anyone else using yahoo to run their ecommerce site? if so where are you getting most of your SE Results? My site has been up for 4 months almost and I am only seeing good results in MSN. I am wondering if the simple Yahoo store manager is really limiting what my store can do. Can anyone give me advice?

also I have kind of a newbie question. How many meta tags should your site have and where should it be located on the site? should each page have it's own meta tag?

Meta tags really do not matter anymore because too many people took advantage of them.

Do you advertise in Yahoo stores etc?

The only SE's that matter are Google and Yahoo, as these are the only ones that drive quality traffic to your website. We have a form on our website, where we ask people how they found us and for which keyword. Nearly 60% says they come from Google, while we have a #9 ranking in Google and a #1 ranking in MSN. Even Yahoo is listed more often than MSN. From all the new visitors we receive, almost 80% is coming directly from the search engine results pages.

Regarding the metatags: There are different metatags you can put in your html code.

We normally use the following format:
<html>
<head>
<title>Your page title with your keywords here</title>
<meta NAME="Description" CONTENT="A brief description of your website with your keywords here">
<meta NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="Repeat your most important keywords here">

Although Corey is right regarding the keywords, in some engines they still help you to gain a ranking on keywords that are not often used or are used too often, i.e. your business name or football. It never hurts to have the keyword metatag.

I also suggest you read some posts in the search engine forum to better understand that SEO is not just implementing metatags.

thanks for the replies. I am just having a hard time getting into yahoo and Google. I am playing the waiting game but I am not sure what else I can do to really improve my site. Will one of you guys take a look at it and give me an honest opinion?

Yahoo stores are not any disadvantage compared to non-Yahoo stores, in getting indexed at either Google or Yahoo (Inktomi)..

You need to focus on the forums here specific to those engines. Read about six months worth of posts, formulate a solid strategy based on the wealth of information, and put it into action. There is no easy fix or solution. It takes time/effort/organization. (A bit of budget doesn't hurt either)..

Well, you can add your wesbite manually to Yahoo, but I do believe there are some costs involved.

Regarding Google, if you have a new website, it could be that your website is in the Google Sandbox. If you don't know what this is, it is about time you start reading posts in the search engine forums! :)

Do you have your business name listed in your metaname keywords? If so, try a Google search for your business name and see if your website has been found. If so, your website is already indexed but is probably still in the Sandbox for your most important keywords.

Last but not least, content is the key to attract search engines, customers and new links from other websites. Make sure your content is fresh and aimed to attract customers that are looking for your keywords. It might also help to pay for search results in the beginning to attract the first visitors.

Many factors decide if people will visit your site and buy from you. There are also other forums on the web where you can have your site reviewed, such as Sitepoint and WebProWorld. An important forum for search engine tips & hints is HighRankings.

I don't claim to be an expert myself, but I have been reading about SEO for more than 5 years now and you have to keep it up in order to be found.

Good luck.

Puma,

First of all it will take awhile to rank with any site.

Secondary I have worked with numerous yahoo stores for the last three years.

The "out of the box" yahoo store has a several deficiencies that can be clean up with basic template modifications. There are a few basic additional mods that should also performed.

Not big bucks, I don't do them myself because I don't do RTML, but know people that do.

I also know of a good yahoo store forum if you are interest. It's a decent one for store owners.

Sticky me if you want more info.

I suggest you start using google adwords.

for my website I get really good traffic that way.

BUT you better spend a ton of time learning how to maxumize your keywords that you pay for!

thanks for all the help. i know i need to have some patience regarding this but I just feel that I am losing out everytime i see a competitor open up another store in my market.
I have done Adwords and my keywords are very $$ and they didn't pay off to well. I will look into it again down the road.

Have you chosen the right keywords? You need to use programs like WordTracker and GoodKeywords to determine your niche keywords. The keyword YOU choose is not always the keyword that YOUR CUSTOMER would use to find your website.
If your keyword is so expensive it might be worthwile to change to another keyword, which is less expensive and might get you more customers in the end for your niche market.
