I just got a chargeback dispute from PayPal, for a purchase that is 64 days old. I thought their limitation was 60 days.

Is this precedented?

How do you deal with chargeback scams?

Frankly, I'm beginning to hate PayPal. How can you protect your e-commerce store from shoplifting, when your payment gateway leaves the back door wide open?

From the Consumers Association (UK)

There is also a time limit on claims - Visa, for example, sets a 120 day time limit which starts from the day you are aware of a problem.

The door may be open wider than you think.

Was this a payment from a PayPal account, or from a credit card?

If it was a credit card, PayPal acts as a gateway / merchant account (similar to Authorize.Net), and they are simply the messenger of the credit card company.

My business maintains a delicate balance of money coming in & money going out. When money comes in, lots of it goes out again. When buyers cancel their payments 60+ days after purchase, it throws the accounting out of whack. WAY out of whack.

What can a merchant do about it? How/when can you know that money is "cleared" and won't be yanked out of your account?
