Zen is a branch of OSC that is supposedly better maintained and supported. Some might disagree with this. I'm of the opinion that neither of them uses modern coding practices, and plan seek out something else in the future.

No, neither support any kind of zone smaller than a state or province.

You use zones to map your taxes.

To get city tax, you have to modify the code to allow it. Neither allow for it out of the box.

Support is poor for both of them, as it is limited to peer help via their forums. If you want a relatively inexpensive cart with a lot of built-in modules/features, I would recommend X-Cart, which as much better support and overall look. It is $200 though, and I know that may not fit your business model at the time.

If I had to choose between the free carts, I would probably say to go with Zen Cart, even though I had a really bad experience with them. Still, Zen looks the best, and the OSC support forums seemed to have fizzled (a lot of unanswered questions on a daily basis). There actually are some users who will help you in the Zen forums. Just make sure you enable private messaging and show your email address to other users, because most of the helpful users do not want to reply to your posts publicly because they're afraid of nasty replies from the forum bullies/know-it-alls. I received almost triple the number of replies privately as I did on the forum itself. In fact, it's better to close your message with something like, "Feel free to contact me via email or PM if you don't want to post publicly." Sadly, it works.

I think you just need to keep in mind that you're getting what you're paying for. I understand that free might be the only option for you right now, but you have to accept that your support will be very limited, as will your input on new features, etc. This can still work for some people. I know there are quite a few very happy Zen Cart users out there.

Good luck with your choice!

I hope Zen Cart's support is fair then OSC. If you're looking alternate of both then you can have a look to cubecart.

I use Oscommerce and am very happy with it. I would say 99% of my questions were answered many times over and all it took was a search of the forums. I rarely had to wait for answers to my questions. The contributions are is tremendous. You can alter Osc many different ways to suit your application. Best of all its free.
Good Luck,

It is funny that some people will come into the Zen Forums and post a few questions and fly off the handle if someone doesn't tell them what they want to hear, critisize and attack the Zen Team, and then run around crying a one sided story on other forums.

I believe that I have clearly established that I was treated poorly at the ZC forums, and I really don't care to debate that matter further. Personally, I believe that anyone considering Zen Cart would be interested in the negative experiences as well as the positive ones. If you had a positive experience with Zen Cart, I think that's great -- I really do. It's a pretty good cart, looks great, it's free, and if it meets your requirements then you got a winner! It didn't meet mine, so I moved on. Unfortunately, I will take a rather negative experience with me, which has jaded my view of Zen Cart as a whole.

Why don't we simply let this rest by simply posting your experiences with Zen Cart? I had a negative experience, but can still manage to squeak out at least a partial recommendation to someone considering it (like I did above). If you had a positive experience (or continue to), please post it without directly attacking me. I'm sure the original poster of this thread would appreciate hearing some positive feedback on ZC, and maybe then your posts won't continue to be moderated off this and every other Zen Cart related thread on this forum.
