We used to have an arrangement with elavon and used their viaclicks software and their payment gateway.

Then they offerred us a new piece of software "virtual merchant" for free about the time of the PCI ..

Now it seems we have to spend £1k with our developer to make our US site talk to "virtual merchant".

Can elavon really have cost all their customers £1k ?
Surely that would be commercial suicide!?

I suppose it depends upon the level you're playing at. There are some merchants that wouldn't bat an eye at that price point.

£1K development - my employer would put that down to BAU.

BAU, meaning business as usual or you "refine" the first word a bit?

Depends on the requirements and monopoly if exists, for coding. Time vs money, knowledge vs money etc. Merchants usually aren't dumb they look around for alternatives.

Am still having trouble with it. Shop has been down a while now and still no simple way to move from viaklix to my virtual merchant. Although the provider elavon tells us repeatedly that a shop that talked to viaklix should with minor changes talk to MyVirtualMerchant.
