How to sell on Twitter and Facebook

My ecommerce business has been doing well over the past year, but almost all my traffic is coming from search engines.

After a little reading, I believe that there might be some potential to generate sales on various social media channels.

My product is a spray that kills specific types of bugs and it's not the type of product that would trigger impulse buying. Users have very specific needs when they need my product and that's why search has been working so well.

I did a little search on Twitter and did find people complaining about certain bug problems that relates to my product.

Here are my questions:
1. Should I use my site's Twitter and start replying to these people with solutions to solve their problems? If so, wouldn't my account like a little spammy reaching out to all these people trying to sell my products?
2. Should I care about how many followers I have since this is a need based product and no one really cares for it until they need it?
3. What type of content should I be tweeting about on my site's Twitter account? Should it just be useful information about killing bugs?
4. Is having a Fan page ever a good idea for my products? Who would want to be fan of a bug spray?

Thanks!

To keep things simple here's one of likely dozens of different approaches.

I agree with your assessment re: Fan page. I say forget the Fan Page for the moment.

Go with Twitter. Go ahead and answer the questions but don't pitch your product unless they're asking for a solution that matches what you offer dead on.

Add value to the discussions - offer insight, resources, and solutions that have nothing to do with your product.

Engage the community on a human level - tweet about topics that are supportive of others and the things that are important to them but not necessarily related to work or buying/selling.

Be aware of your online voice and presence. Be real and genuine. Doing this and offering your professional experience will help establish you as a trusted go to person for help with these bugs. The natural extension is they will see your bio and the link to your website. Be sure your bio is engaging and clearly identifies you and your business.
