I am looking into building an e-commerce site to sell computer and comm installation products. I'd seen many sites that look like my ideal. www.partsguysusa.com is a good example and seems fairly simple and straight forward to me.

I have a web designer friend who said I could get a canned site (hopefully like the above) to which he and I could add my parts and content. ...I'm wondering about the wisdom in that.

I'm learning that there are many components and costs and want to make a good strategic decision.

Any pointers on designers, costs, pros and cons would be appreciated. Thanks, Bill

try scriptlance or another elance site. You also need to narrow down what shopping cart script you want to use. Most people opt for Magento because its free, but you will need a programmer who is experienced. And then you will also need someone to design your site. Or you can try volusion as they have a ready to package and you can probably configure your store by yourself. There is a monthly fee with that however.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld innetso!
There are many things to consider here. Not the least of which is the flexibility and ease of maintenance and upgrade. Speed is another issue as is customization and security. There are many others as well depending upon the particulars of what you're after. I suggest you go a bit of reading of these past discussions on carts we've discussed here. They may help.
