Alexa seem to be a searching engine providing information about traffic ranking of your sites. Do you think it's accruate? I wonder if it would help promote our website.

I do know Alexa, but we don't personally use it to gain traffic or anything. The only feature I like is the Wayback Machine. In my opinion, the influence of Alexa is highly overrated.

I would like to know how it could help me, but so far, no one has given me the right answer.

I definitely don't want to download a toolbar of any kind.

Well, I think Alexa is more kind of a tracking system to see how your site ranks when it comes to visitors and popularity of the website. So yes, this may look good, but also depends on what business you are in. Portals such as MSN and search engines as Google will always be in the top 10.

I more care about my Google listings to be honest, but Alexa is great if you want to see how your website is doing traffic wise compared to competitors.

Other than that, I personally don't use it. Maybe there are others out there who use it on a regular basis?

I use the Alexa rankings in a very broad way to evaluate other sites in relation to ours. For example, if a potential customer wants to squeeze an extra discount from us because of their "selling power", and I see their site has a ranking of 3,000, then I'd give them some consideration. Likewise, if they claim it is a long-standing site and it has a rank of 600,000 then I'd probably not give them much credence (not to imply I rely solely on the Alexa ranking; it's just one piece of the puzzle).

Another example: if a competitor is selling as cheap or cheaper than I am, but their Alexa ranking stays above, say, 300,000 then I don't worry as much about them as I would if their ranking was near or better than mine.

Again, it is just one little tool, and keep in mind that the rankings are very slow to change.

Anybody know an alternative?
What about Metrics Market? (although one thread raise the conjecture that MM actually might be using an Alexa feed)
