Another idea I've toyed with lately, is offering a kit version of a couple of our products.

We sell a couple items that in full finished size, are quite large. This is an issue lots of times when shipping. Sometimes we simply can't ship to certain countries with smaller length restrictions. There's a way where I could basically offer the 'guts' if you will, of these certain products. Those parts could be sent in a very small box. The people at the other end could find the large enclosure to put them in themselves. Of course, we would sell the kit version for less money. The only thing I worry about is that, showing how everything works on the inside is sort of making it easier for people to copy. Also... I worry about customers having that sort of "that's it?" feeling when they see what the inside looks like. It's one of those deals where most people would probably assume it's a lot more complicated than it really is.

Anyway... Just throwing it out there and wondering if anybody has done something like that.

How big are we talking here? Refrigerator sized?

If people want to copy your product, they'll have no problem taking it out of its existing casing so it's not going to hurt anything. In fact, it might actually create an opportunity for you that you haven't thought of yet - private labelers could buy your product and put their own branded casing on it and sell it as their own. Without knowing what you're selling I don't know if that's a fit for your product or not, but something to think about.
