I have many clients who are car dealers, they are doing good as far as the traffic is concerned. But very few people actually fill in the Forms for Quick Quote, contact us, order parts etc.
Except when some kind of promotion is running, lot of people fill in the forms.

Since promotions can be a short time way of generating prospective leads, are there any other ways to raise the no. of people who fill the form online (prospective leads)?

Well, this is the classic tyre kickers industry isn't it?

I have no personal knowledge of this at all from the point of view of sites - so maybe I am way wrong - but I know dozens of people who seem to get great enjoyment from looking at cars online, all sorts of them, even when they have not the remotest intention of buying. Can't see it myself.

Anyone I know who is genuinely looking for cars will look at dozens of sites before filling in anything, and in fact may never do so, but just use the internet to decide where to go for a real look.

Both of these categories will be very likely to fill in a form if there is a promotion - they fancy an incentivised test drive or winning something or whatever.

My guess is you will always have a relatively low enquiry rate at a car site.

What kind of traffic is it? I'd guess that if your website's visitor is not nearby then what's the use of filling in a quote form when he/she can't go see the cars in person?

Maybe focusing on getting local traffic would boost conversion?

Is this the only way they are measuring the site's performance? If so, they should note that for something like cars people will do a lot of research online and not fill anything out.

Also, if other dealers are showing the price why would I want to give my information for a quote. I would like to see the price with the car.

You should focus on customer experience by analyzing how the consumer thinks and behave online through adding interactive product guides, advanced filtering options for search results and online customer service tools, and comparison of products and service with other competitors convincing them why your product is the best.

You should research about the search, support and promotion activities through proper benchmarking analysis, which can be enable you to raise the conversion rates through implementing the changes based on actual customer experience and the behavior of a viewers.

I have a brother in this business, their site produces tons of crank calls, Id say it was 50/50.

I.e 50%crank and 50% come and view so somehow im not at all surprised that people dont ask for a price etc.

Do you have a tag line saying youll call them back within 1 hour or so?

You can be able to increase conversion also by providing them a free newsletter or discount offers to the 1st time visitors.

You should use the data to gather information the real experience of your customers and how can you improve the "conversion rate" of web-based sales.
