Yes, they can use cards, and they don't have to be a member.

I think there are a few ways with PayPal. This is my understanding and it could be wrong, but I think it's basically correct. Other readers please feel free to revise this.

Standard PayPal payments:

First the customer enters shipping address and other details in your checkout, then when checkout sends the customer to PayPal where they can pay with their sign in and pay with their PayPal balance, echeck or credit card. If they don't have an account, they can still pay by credit card without making a PayPal account.

PayPal Express Checkout

Basically the same as Standard above, but the customer do not have to enter their shipping info twice (once on your site and once on PayPal). They are sent to PayPal from your checkout, and then back to your site for confirmation.

PayPal Website Payments Pro:

The customer never leaves your site. They enter credit card info on your site your website sends the info to PayPal and then the pages updates when the card has been processed. The customer does not need a PayPal account. In order to use this, I believe PayPal requires that you have PayPal express checkout enabled, even though this has nothing to do with PayPal express. I think you need an SSL Certificate on your site for this.

For PayPal Website Payments Pro, I am not sure if the customer knows it is being done by PayPal.
