European Based Merchant Selling in the US

I have several successful (content) websites online and want to expand them with an ecommerce shop. The problem is that I live in Europe, but most of my customers are based in the US, with these 2 consequences:

1) Shipping stock from the US to Europe is expensive.
2) Shipping products from Europe to American customers is expensive.

This makes that I can't offer competitive prices.
I have a dropship deal with some companies, but the biggest ones don't do dropshipping.

A fulfillment service might be a solution, but it is my understanding that I need to label products before I send them to the fulfillment provider. This is not possible because the products would be sent directly from the supplier to the fulfiller.

Is there anyone in the same situation? Any tips or solutions?

I'm not experienced with this situation but it strikes me as odd that you would need to label the products before you shipped them (or the drop shippers sent them) to the US. Did I misunderstand?
