So while building a new site for my widget company I've run into a small problem, "how do i quantify the size (dimensions) of a product in a way that people understand and is relevant.

(not sure if i can say this, so snip if i can't)
but we sell safes, and i need a way to relate how high the safe stands in a way that easily measured, a competitor uses a person and this works well but it's not relevant.

I wonder what experiences others have had letting customers know sizes and dimensions, or even weights? and whats the best way to convey it to the customer, a "but how big is really?" button orperhaps a strap-line "this x is about has tall as 9 stacked fileafax's"?

Feedback would be grand.

Can you not just add the dimensions WxHxD in cm and/or inches and the weight in kg/pounds, that should make it clear for everybody ?

Hi Staffa,

yer i have all dimensions by people always see to ask, ok but how high is that. I'd like some way to visually show them maybe, in relation to something else, as sometimes numbers can just seem abstract.

Use cans of Coke as a reference ..exists the world over

thus .."it is about 9 cans of Coke high by 6 cans of Coke wide by 6 cans of coke deep ( external measures ) ..and you could fit 7x4x4 = 112 cans of Coke inside it" ..

it will also work for weight .."as heavy as .......full cans of Coke"

if it's a gun safe, list weapons that'll fit.

if it's a file safe, perhaps list bins that'll fit (and upsell those bins).

maybe come up with a list of ten typical things people would store, then have a legend box like...

Item -- Height -- Fits
Big Bertha Driver -- 42" -- No
Browning Shotgun Model 115 -- 38" -- No
Verne Troyer (Mini-Me) -- 32" -- Yes
Gold Plated 4 Slice Toaster -- 16" -- Yes
Husband's Bowling Ball -- 13" -- Yes

Do some viral videos where you see how many tacos you can shove into a safe.

When they ask but how high is that, say:

It's that high (holds up ruler).

+1 good idea haha

One of my customer service guys took a 10 minute phone call where the entire time was spent trying to help a guy who didn't grasp the concept of length, width, and height.

Also, sometimes people don't know the difference between 1" and 1' or even what the " means

@Leosghost Thanks, yer we toyed with the idea of using cans but it wasn't really relevant and we wern't sure people would get it...

@RhinoFish Thanks, i like the idea of a what will fit it table. Like the idea of the viral. But i think i'll have more fun blowing safes up as a viral :-)

@MrHard thats a little hard over the phone..:-)

Just put a sentence in like:

"If in doubt about which size to buy, always buy one size bigger - you can never have too much room for your valuables"

And watch your upsells soar! :)
