I guess there are always a new crop of wage earners coming of age who will start buying in their own name, many of whom will create paypal accounts, but aside from those, is it fair to say that by 2010, most all USA online shoppers already have a paypal account or am i making the wrong call on this?

Anyone have numbers on this one?

no idea on the numbers, but i'd guess a good percentage do NOT have paypal or do not use it on any regular basis. credit cards are still king.

Paypal has dramatically increased in popularity over the last year or two (for purchasers) and it is much more widely used but I think it would be wrong to say that most online shoppers already have an account.

Maybe PP is picking up. We just had our first customer ask why we don't accept it. (online for almost 10 years) Then he used a credit card to buy.

We started accepting PayPal on our site this year. The number of transactions are more than Discover but still well less than AMEX. Also, you can only take PayPal over the web and not over the phone like a credit card.

I Like Paypal.
But I don't think it has 100% useage by online shoppers by a long way !
You should read the number of complaints by ebay users when they decided to accept payment by Paypal only.

Paypal has a virtual terminal for you to take phone and fax orders.

There are a lot of users that have created PP accounts but have since refused to use them any more.

Not in USA but I have had two PP accounts created automatically when sites that I purchased from used PP to process my cards.

I believe this is the credit card processing arm of PayPal, that competes with traditional merchant accounts. But yes, they offer that service also. We have considered using that because it combines credit card and paypal payments into one account, so it makes accounting easier.

I'm in the US, and I personally don't use Paypal. They offer me nothing. Why would I use their service?

20% PayPal 80% credit cards. My demographics are to the older shopper.

Virtually all the people I deal with seem to have no problem using it, but many still don't have actual accounts. That virtual terminal is an interesting option. I don't think that I get enough requests to justify it though. I do about 70% of my sales as individual PP invoice quotes, many of which are international. I very rarely have any complaints about that, and in fact, many people seem to prefer that. I think people have warmed up to PP a lot more in the last couple years. I think most of the remaining negativity is from people who just repeat other things they've read, as opposed to actual experience, and also not understanding that you don't have to be a member. But that's just my opinion. To me, it's just another type of gateway more than anything. If you're simply collecting money, it's no worse than anything else. However, if you are selling hundreds or thousands of items that are widely available elsewhere, I could understand why you would want to offer other options.

Paypal has a virtual terminal for you to take phone and fax orders.

If a person has money in their PayPal account and wants to use that, then the terminal is no use. Virtual Terminal is credit/debit card only. For the customer to use his PayPal money you have to email them a money request and have them respond, all the while hoping that it didn't hit their spam filter.

We use PayPal and its credit card processing for work, I don't use it personally.
