Here's a list of the top 500 ecommerce sites according to Internet Retailer.

Kind of amazing that all three of the major office supplies are still in the top ten. Supposedly we're moving to a paperless world, but that industry still dominates.

Considering that they also sell scanners, laptops, netbooks, networking equipment, software, etc., (not to mention offering tech support) they are actually helping companies move to become paperless, while at the same time still targeting the papered offices. So not that surprising that they're still up there.

LA Police Gear ?

These lists are often a pay for placement many more times then we would like to think.

I'm positively surprised that they actually used sales volume, not traffic volume :-)

IMO the Internet Retailer list is not a pay per performance. They do use forecasting to project the rankings (Industry Average Ticket, Avg. Conversions, and traffic rankings) in many cases where the merchant does not make the revenues public. The do disclose this in the list.

I was excited when my company made the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest growing private companies in America this year, but I have to question the motives behind creating such a list. I have received dozens of emails, phone calls and direct mail pieces to order plaques, mugs, banners, etc promoting my "prestigious accomplishment". Not to mention invitations to an exclusive gathering in Washington DC for ranking members of the Inc 5000. As you can guess, the event is a paid event to attend.

5000 list
Is there really a 5000 list? Used to be just 500.

Of course it's scam-like, like all those Who's Who lists or obscure college honor societies (get your copy of the membership book for $89). They're betting many of the 5000 will mention the magazine in their advertising or link to their website.

How can IR know the web revenue of most companies? Even the largest public corps rarely break out online sales.
