These lists are often a pay for placement many more times then we would like to think.
I was excited when my company made the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest growing private companies in America this year, but I have to question the motives behind creating such a list. I have received dozens of emails, phone calls and direct mail pieces to order plaques, mugs, banners, etc promoting my "prestigious accomplishment". Not to mention invitations to an exclusive gathering in Washington DC for ranking members of the Inc 5000. As you can guess, the event is a paid event to attend.
5000 listIs there really a 5000 list? Used to be just 500.
Of course it's scam-like, like all those Who's Who lists or obscure college honor societies (get your copy of the membership book for $89). They're betting many of the 5000 will mention the magazine in their advertising or link to their website.
How can IR know the web revenue of most companies? Even the largest public corps rarely break out online sales.
