I'm trying to buy an item from a website. This is what the site said: "The item will be shipped after Paypal verifies the payment was valid" I just want to know what the process of paypal verifying the validity of a payment is.

Once the payment amount is added to the recipient's PayPal balance, there is no additional verification step. I don't know what the merchant means by that statement. It could be that they are accustomed to receiving eChecks that take a few days to clear, in which case they certainly should wait for those to clear (and be added to their balance) before shipping the product.
