If someone uses PayPal to pay for an item, but funds the transfer through their credit card (instead of their PayPal balance), how does the charge appear on their credit card statement? Does it show PayPal or the merchant's name?

It displays both... you can edit what it says in the "profile" section of the PayPal account.
Usually it will say PAYPAL*LIFE-IN-ASIA or whatever you choose.
