Hi,

If both me (in USA) and a relative (in Europe) has skype installed, can we talk to each other for free using a headset?

I see on the skype site that it says free calling but then there is a page there that lists calling rates. Are these calling rates just if I wanted to call to a direct number oversees using my skype headset?

Thank you,

olimits7

Yes, once you start using the phone option it costs money (going from memory, its been a year since I last used Skype) .. but within Skype you can use the teleconferencing function for free. I use to use it to talk to relatives in the US (I am in Canada) and it was free.

We use Skype to call international customers. Works great. Rates are very low. Before using Skype we would average 80$/week, using Skype about 5$/week. But you need dsl/cable else sounds bad. We have a cordless Skype phone. Headset is kinda bulky to work with.

My arm starts to go numb using a phone, so I prefer the headset anyday. Most times I just use the built in mic on my computer, which works great.

As mentioned, you`ll both need a fast connection or else it will be choppy. Also, expect a slight delay with your conversation. I chat with friends in Hong Kong from the UK for free and its generally very good. The sound does tend to fade sometimes and/or breakup. But over all, for free, no complaints.

So, olimits7, the answer to your question is yes.
