I've been in the web development for the past 12 years. I did everything from ASP, ASPX, PHP and CFM etc.
Few years ago my partner and I talked about running an online auction website. Over the time I built a few demos and worked really well. I've also looked at Probid and other auction scripts which I find them crap and I will never use them.
I also worked for a well known auction site few years back and studied everything to know how to run an online auction site. For the past month I've started building my own site in PHP, AJAX and designed in CSS format. I've written a lot of scripts for the site and functions well. I am only 10% done. To write a full fuctionaly site takes a lot of my time.
My plan is to start in my country only (I will not say what country) and market and promote using Internet Advertising and Media (as in Newspaper and Radio because I have connections).
If it goes well, I will go world-wide.
Tell me if I am crazy!
Cheers!
Anyway, you're not choosing an easy subject to get a foothold in. Do you have any features planned that aren't found on typical auction sites? Do you have deep pockets for advertising or an angle to draw people over to your site? Without at least one of these you're going to need to get creative in order for the site to reach critical mass. Coding skills are good but it will take business sense to make it a success too.
Get a working version up and ask some friends to try it out, if they say you're crazy then... listen to them. Good luck!
