considering adding a 'blog component' to my website for both customer interest & perhaps some seo - anyone tried?

It works - the problem is that you have to update it on a regular basis and for it to be interesting to your target customer.
I always struggle with the regular part of it. It helps if your can make it a normal part of your day.

Our business blogs have been extremely valuable to connect with our customers and show them new products. An optimized Wordpress blog can rank really, really well in search engines also.

I put my Blog in a iframe for the 1st couple months and then broke it away from my site completely. I make about 2 post a month and keep that consistant. It is doing ok with a page rank of 2. Was a 4 at one point.

I have a blog on a separate domain that points to my business (and vice versa). It is DARN HARD to keep those posts up.
Forgot to add: but I get more clicks from it than I do from AdWords.

If its just as a replace for a news section then I'm not convinced it is very useful and subscribers will be hard to come by. If you publish well researched valuable content then you will likely get more traction. I've got a blog on an ecomm site and it has taken a lot more work than I thought it would when I started 2 1/2 years ago.
A blog can be handy for broader industry networking.

Having a blog is a very good idea.
Blogging is the best way to create value for your customers by updating with the interesting updates....
The point is that information should be good enough to make visitors active.

Blogs can work really well if have unique valuable content and offcourse, updated frequently.
Also, they can help to know the feedback through comments about the products however, really important to moderate them.
