Monitoring payment gateways

Hi,

I believe the production servers of the payment gateways do not accept test cards.

If one were to develop some kind of monitoring scripts to ensure that payments are going through, what is the best way to go about it?

How does the big ecommerce players monitor their payment gateways?

There are test modes and/or codes that you can send to them, however I dont know of a monitoring script out there.
