What are the top of the line options for stores that will handle sales and distribution of digital content (i.e. allow the customer to download)?

There are many stores that allow you to sell physical goods. Amazon, Yahoo Shopping, Xcart, Paypal, etc. will all either provide you a store on their domain or a white label store to make it look like it is yours on your own URL.

A few of these, such as Xcart will also allow for digital transactions but it is not clear how well this works. Now, for mobile applications, Apple offers this through iTunes for music and the iStore for applications that work on their devices.

I assume that most stores that would allow for the sale of digital goods would require me (or the application/content vendor) to handle DRM, the client side application that would transfer (or install) the downloaded file to another device if needed (e.g. phone, mobile multimedia device, navigation system or whatever), but if the store software/service handled part of that for a cost, that might be an option.

Any help or ideas you can offer would be appreciated.

Are you looking for a software to open your own digital downloads store, or for a provider of such a service?

What kind of content do you mean? Software downloads are very different from music downloads and from eBooks etc in many business and technical aspects.

I am open to either hosting everything myself or using a provider of a service. There are pluses and minuses to both, but so far the only thing that I have seen that seems really useful is Handago, which only handles apps for mobile phones.

I am looking at software and content sales into applications that have already been installed (maybe free, maybe purchased).

So, I have been looking but cannot find any companies that offer solutions to sell digital goods, except for the smaller x-cart styled sites for basic files. Oh well.

I've not used it, but ECT (eCommerce Templates) offers a "digital download" plugin for their cart system.

Handster: We sell games and some applications, plus upgrades to both (e.g. add-on packs, additional functionalities, books for our ebook reader).
