It would also be nice to be able to customize it fairly easily. I have been a programmer for the last 12 years under many enviornments, so can pick up most languages to do modifications fairly easily if the code is commented at all. I do not like Windows servers, so it will need to run under Linux. I would prefer somethign in perl or PHP. A full cart / content management system would be acceptable if I had the option of linking straight to the cart and bypassing the dynamic stuf.

I currently use Mal's E-Commerce and have been happy with it, but am looking to bring everythig onto one server under my own SSL cert.
why make all this extra work for yourself?
anything you do will be little different to Mals - in fact, you'll have to do a lot of work to build your own system to be as good as Mals or any of the other remote carts.
you won't save yourself any money as you'll be using your own SSL certificate instead of Mals.
even if you match Mals etc, the only difference will be the URL in the address bar. very very few people notice that when shopping ...............
We switched ouselves from Mals to Litecommerce, keeping all our static html pages.
