This is my first post on this forum so a big hello to all!

Here is my situation. My boss has a store setup through a host provider named Houston Hosts. He built the store and added items using the system in place a long time ago. No one ever purchased anything so he gave up on the idea until now.

Recently he had myself and his secretary go out and enter items into an excel spreadsheet for a 'master list'. All of these items are taken from a place called Impact Promotions. Basically what Impact does is provide a centralized place to find thousands of items from sellers all over. It has been a huge task to fill up the spreadsheet with all of the info.

Now, we are faced with a rough question. We were told to enter the items with no price or shipping info. All of the items need to have some kind of shipping rate associated with them. We were thinking we may need to associate some kind of shipping category ("Shipping Rate A") to each item.

It is agreed that UPS will be the shipping provider for all of the orders.

How can we make the process easier? My boss swears there is a 3rd party application that can calculate shipping on the fly. Problem is working with houston hosts site creator does not allow you to integrate asp.net coding. I am in a real dilemma here and I am not sure what route I should take.

Any thoughts?

well the question is can you use the same host where you are already without using their 'site creator' and if so, can you integrate the asp.net coding that you want to in some other way.

is there a reason why you mention asp.net?

if you can't then you'll obviously have to move hosts and maybe at the same time really think about what you want to do, before chosing the new host.

if you haven't made any sales so far i shouldn't think it would be a great loss to move on.

Oh yeah, I mention asp.net because I am most familiar with that. I did see some third party shipping calculators available too.

I really would like to switch hosts, but it really comes down to a bosses perspective. I think I may have to initiate a shipping standard to use.

of course a clean start would be nice
but i guess your boss won't allow that.

i know it seems a cop out suggestion, but have you tried phoning the host to see if they might be able to supply an add on component for you?

how was the shipping going to be calculated? is the size or weight included in the spreadsheet? if not how would the shipping be calculated anyway? i think your idea of giving every item a shipping category and calculating it from that is the best way.
