Hi

OSCommerce provides a nice packaged shopping cart .It has a ton of useful add ons. However I am wondering if this is the route to go or to build a shopping cart from scratch ?

Whats the general consensus ?

Cheers

There is no consensus because the best product to use depends on what your needs are. If you're selling one product, osCommerce is overkill. But if you have 3,000 products to sell, it may be a good candidate for you.

I like competitors using osCommerce because many of them have no clue about SEO.

so what would you recommened as a good candidate to use when taking SEO into account. (yes ive read all the previous comments including magento , x cart , vilusion (spelling) , zen ect

Im looking at adding 1000+ products plus I would like to customise the product to add a couple more features and databases .

Im quite like oscommerce and x cart at the moment.

Nowadays a major criterion would be the cart company's ability to survive tough economic times.

I wouldn't consider any company without a track record of several years. It's certainly a plus if the cart survived the dotcom bust. Consider Shopsite which has good SEO ability. Its owner seems to be financially stable. The cart is still being regularly enhanced.

Absolutely, and they're too cheap to pop for a proper cart. OSC retailers never seem to last.
