What would I use to set up a system to allow a customer who orders x quantity of y product on a regular basis to enable this - say with a shopping cart?

one way to do it would be to have it auto re-order every 3 months.

another way to do it would be to automatically send a friendly "reminder to reorder" email every x days as selected by the customer.

What shopping carts allow this?

this would have to be integrated across a few dozen products.

is there maybe a way to do it with Act or Salesforce or are there other ways to do it?

Off the top of my head I'd go after having the user set up an account and allow them to choose the period of time for reminders. Then I'd add on additional tools like an tracking tool that automatically keeps track of their current medication and forewarns them of any conflicts with other drugs they purchase or let's them know about standard warnings as well as reminds them in advance that their perscription may be up for renewal.

This isn't standard cart functionality though. Best to get a programmer involved IMHO.

thanks, this wouldn't be a med sale, but that's a good thought that doesn't apply here.

these are products that wear out regularly just as a function of normal use.

is there anything off the shelf that does anything remotely like this?

Got it. There may be add-on tools that allow for reminders but I can't quite imagine buyers would use it for clothing - even work related clothing. It's too easy to just shop around when you notice the old ones becoming threadbare. But see if you can locate an add on script - check over at hotscripts or one of the other script sites. Be careful about what you download though. If you really want to do it right, hire a programmer.
