Does anybody know the process to go through in order to become a merchant processor for visa/mastercard & amex? How difficult and costly might this process be?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld steve62, Each merchant account and gateway service has their own way of doing things but they are similar. Costs are all over the place. The best thing you can do for yourself is to build a spreadsheet to compare the details of each one and then spend a day or two on the phone and on the Net researching and filling it in. Then you'll have something to work with.
