Suggestions for Managing Digital Downloads

Hello,

I'm thinking about releasing some software as digital download. So people will be able to purchase my software online and then be able to download it. There are two issues that I can think of:

1) How do I keep track of previous users who have purchased the software and allow them to download new releases?

2) How do I make sure only people who have purchased the software are able to download it? Obviously I can't just put a direct link to the software on my website.

Do people have suggestions? Thanks.

I think the free Oscommerce shopping cart supports downloads. You could install it and check how Oscommerce does it. I don't know however if or how Oscommere manages updates. But since there are thousands of extensions to Oscommerce I would be very surprised if your problem has not already be addressed and solved.
