Most effective landing page design?

In looking at competitor sites in my niche, I find that many of them have all of their brand-name widgets on a single page. For example, if I do a search for "Acme widgets," I'll find sites with a single page that has thumbnails, prices, model numbers, etc for all of the models of Acme widgets. I've always thought such a design was cluttered.

What I've done with my landing pages is to have <h1> tags such as "Acme Widgets, Low Prices, Free Shipping," then a nice photo of one of the widgets, then a couple of paragraphs talking about the benefits of Acme widgets. Then I have links to individual model pages that read, "Acme Model XYZ Widget, Free Shipping," or words to that effect. The individual model pages provide more detailed information about each model, as well as pricing, shipping info, etc.

The "buy now" buttons aren't on the landing page on my site, but on the individual model pages.

I'm new at selling on the internet, but the uncluttered approach seemed to me to be a better idea.

Does anyone have any experience testing designs, or any other feedback?

Go buy the Marketing Sherpa book on Landing Page Design. And if you can afford it, get an account there and read their case studies on what others have done. You'll spend several hundred dollars for these but the returns will be well worth it.
